Event Dates: Tuesday September 17, 2013 – Tuesday November 12, 2013
Friends Nights at Aryaloka are from 6:45-9:00, when we gather to meditate and explore aspects of Buddhism through workshops, talks, study, ritual, or discussion. The emphasis is on practical application of Buddhist principles in our own lives. Although there is no fee for this event, donations are appreciated.
The 40-minute silent meditation in the main shrine room is typically not guided. (If you prefer to have prior instruction, see the Programs section for more information on introductory classes.)
An option for a guided meditation is offered in the library, after which, you can join the rest of the group for the second half of the evening.
Study & Discussion Groups – Autumn Series:
(Tuesday, Sep. 17 through Tuesday, Nov. 12)
Uniting Body Heart and Mind with Chanting
Led by Amala
For the next few weeks we will practice chanting. We’ll learn traditional Buddhist mantras and some verses of Refuge. We’ll look at the words as sound and also explore their meaning and the context of chanting within Buddhist practice. We’ll experience chanting as a body-heart-mind opening practice, as protection, focus, and collective mindfulness. This group will meet in the shrine room after the evening meditation.
Spiritual Friendship… Thicker Than Blood!
Led by Arjava
Join Arjava to explore the theme of friendship, with particular focus on spiritual friendship. What is the Buddhist ideal of spiritual friendship and how can we help each other grow on this path? Arjava will use the book, “Thicker than Blood” by Maitrehandu, as well as poetry, stories, and even watching a sitcom or two. Expect a lively group discussion!
Introducing Buddhism
Led by Lilasiddhi and Shantikirika
This eight-week course will provide newcomers an overview of the fundamental teachings of Buddhist philosophy and practice.
